Michael in His New Shirt, Me in My New Sweater

Friends, I know, those sunglasses....

I picked those up a few years ago at the Chelsea flea market and never really felt they suited me, but somehow, with my funky new sweater, they work (or so I think).

Check us both out modeling our new duds by clicking here.

The sweater is a very basic garment with simple finishes, like an oversized sweatshirt.  If at some future time I find the perfect matching blue knit rib, I might rework it with cuffs, neckband, and waistband.  For now, however, I like it as-is.  Definitely not drab.

As for the shirt, you've seen that in detail already.  Michael loves it and I know he'll get a lot of wear out of it, which is always satisfying.

And now, back to the sewing table.

Have a great day, everybody!

  1. Dearest Peter,
For the first time ever I have to say that I REALLY HATE the "cartoon" sweater. Viewed it on the Mood Sewing Network and think it best viewed here under wraps!! I trembled when I first saw the fabric so I'm not surprised that I don't like it any better as a garment. Apologies but I have to be brutally honest.

  2. Dear, Dear Peter,
Forgot to say that Michaels's shirt is superbly made and a pleasure to look at.

  3. Love the shirt. It's a great palette for Michael and the pattern is beautiful, modern, and interesting.

The sweater. Hmmm. I like the decision re. cuffs and neck as adding ribbing to what is already a huge statement would be too much. My only tweak would be to make it more fitted similar to what Mr. King was wearing during your sewing session. I certainly don't hate it and actually like the knit itself but it's so loud that it appears to be wearing you; a closer fit would mean slightly less fabric, would make it look more custom, and would help balance the sweater and the wearer. My $0.02.

  4. I'm not a fan of the sweater itself, but I do admire that you are not afraid to new things. Good for you! It is what makes sewing fun. Michael's shirt is gorgeous.

  5. Peter, how do you manage to "stash" enough buttons to trim out an entire shirt? I can never find nearly enough identical buttons without going retail.

    1. I buy mine 7 for a dollar locally. If I need a particular color (like gray), I have to buy them.

    3. I know. It does seem like that! My only options within a 250 radius are Joann's, Michael's, and a couple of locally owned quilt shops which are quite nice but of limited use to me as I am not a quilter. Oh, and estate sales, of which I am now a fan. It's odd to think of being able to get pretty much anything you want within walking distance of your house.

  8. I love the sweater! It's definitely a "Look At Me!" kind of garment and such fun. I like it in this kind of sweatshirt style. It looks cozy and the antidote to winter blues. And, as others have said, Michael's shirt is excellent: beautifully made and completely suited to his coloration. A home run!

  9. You both look ready for spring! Beautiful workmanship on Michael's shirt. It looks really nice on him! Your sweater reminds me a Peter Max print. :)

  10. Confession time: I BOUGHT a men's shirt out of the Uniqlo Liberty line last night (there are some advantages to the west coast, like PST). Certainly less money than making one, and we'll see if it's any good. I am sure it will not be as nice as the one Michael is wearing now, but it will have better buttonholes than I can make at present.
Now that sweater.....I could make that. When you tire of it: hats hats hats.

  11. Peter, it seams to me that Michael has sloped shoulders. Did you ever made a sloped shoulders adjustment for him to get read of those diagonal folds in front and back coming for the shoulder? Would this be an idea for you? Sewingzoe

  12. I saw that on the post on the Mood Sewing Network blog, but I did not know how to react there.

  13. You two are gorgeous! Now I have to check out that sweater on Mood. Apparently, it's polarizing - which means you're doing something right. :-)

  14. Well done on both projects. Your sweater looks cheery and fun. Perfect for Spring-y smiles after a dreary winter (or so I seem to vaguely remember winters in NYC). Michael's new shirt looks very top-end and flattering. Speaking of which (flattering and "top" end), I see Michael has a new 'do?? I sort of miss his wavy locks, but this new cropped style suits him very much too.

  16. Peter - I enjoy this site very much! Recently, a lovely little woman gave me three boxes of vintage patterns, many of them from the 40s and 50s. A great majority of them are a size 12 and I am wondering if Cathy Lane can wear that size vintage pattern. If so, I would like to send a few to you. Also, about 1/3 of the patterns are without their outer envelope and are just the instructions and actual pattern pieces. I would like to send some of them to you for your review and/or use as they are very cool and distinctive. Just let me know. Thank you for all of the enjoyment you have brought to so many of us. Susan

  19. SJ Kurtz, have you tried using a Singer or Grietz buttonhole attachment on your machine?
